Biofuels
Concerns about the environmental impacts related to fossil fuel use as well as global dependency on oil are leading to an expanding global biofuels market. This presents both opportunities and challenges to stakeholders, including policy makers around the world.

These challenges include:

  • the contribution biofuels can make to overall renewable energy targets
  • being able to accurately quantify and manage the life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions from biofuel supply chains
  • ensuring that large-scale biofuel supply is sourced from sustainable feedstocks
  • and balancing the demand for food with an increasing demand for feedstocks and land from the fuel market.
Ecofys is a leading company in biofuels, with a large team of experts dedicated to this topic. We advise a wide range of clients in both the public and private sectors on the development and implications of biofuels policies. We were among the first to start discussions on biofuels sustainability, to establish workable criteria and to initiate broad discussion on this topic.

Our services include:

  • Advice on biofuels policy design and evaluation, in particular the relationship to other renewable energy policies and the sustainability of biofuels
  • Developing models and tools to assess and manage fuel chain emissions and costs
  • Potential studies for biofuels
  • Strategy development for sourcing fuel supplies sustainably, including:
    - Market assessment of biofuel supply and impacts of policy and system design
    - Publication and information services, including market bulletins and websites, and training courses.
