Ecofys presents first grid-connected car in the Netherlands
Ecofys brings ‘clean transport’ one step closer with a hybrid vehicle that can be connected to the grid. Not only is the range of the vehicle when running on electrical power thus increased, but in future it will also be possible to use it as a back-up source of electricity in case of power outages. Ecofys is presenting the world’s first climate-neutral Plug-in Prius at the International Fine Art and Antiques Fair (TEFAF) in Maastricht in the Netherlands on March 9.
Plug-in Hybrid Electrical Vehicles (PHEVs)
PHEVs are vehicles that are equipped with a fuel combustion engine as well as high-capacity batteries. This way the PHEV can receive an extra charge by plugging it into the electricity grid.
In addition to increasing the range of the vehicle running on electricity to over 40 kilometres, PHEVs reduce fuel costs and noise levels even further. And since PHEVs emit both less CO2 and particulate matter, they represent an excellent option for combating both climate change and air quality problems.
Ecofys converted a conventional Toyota Prius into a Plug-in Prius, together with supplier Ecordis and car dealer Mengelers. This will be the world’s first climate-neutral PHEV. Its limited CO2emissions are fully compensated by carbon credit certificates and any electricity taken from the grid will be green power.
Emergency power supply
The presentation of the Plug-in Prius marks the start of a research and demonstration programme in which Ecofys will test and develop new clean transport concepts.
Because the PHEV can be connected to the grid, it can also be used to generate and store energy locally. The vehicle can thus provide back-up capacity in case of power outages while helping to balancing supply and demand in the grid.
