The Province of North-Rhine/Westphalia initiated
the project “50 solar housing estates NRW”, in order
to demonstrate innovative solar energy applications in the built
environment. One of the first areas that was turned into a solar
housing estate is Köln–Bocklemünd, where about 650
residential units of two housing associations were renovated. This
area was built in the 60s and after renovation it is now characterised
by its very energy efficient housing units – due to the high
insulations standard – combined with nice esthetics because
of the visible solar energy elements that are partly integrated
in the façade. Both renovation projects were completed in
2001.
The renovation in Köln-Bocklemünd
is an exemplary project which combines energy savings with the use
of renewable energy sources in an optimal manner. As such the attactiveness
of the housing units increased considerably. Because of its innovative
character it received a lot of attention even outside of the Province
of NRW. The project was awarded a price by Stern as Ecocity winner
